Healthcare reform regulations, increasing costs, and more competition are driving employers and their health plans to focus more than ever on opportunities to reduce cost trends. For example, the country experienced a 3.0% growth in per capita gross (allowed) medical and pharmacy costs from 2012 to 2013. Truven Health Analytics anticipates those costs in 2014 and 2015 will increase by 4% to 5% or more. By taking a data-driven approach, payers can manage costs and, ultimately, make their benefit programs sustainable in the context of healthcare reform. They can also maximize opportunities to improve population health and productivity and optimize the delivery of care.
The median fiscal and operational performance of U.S. hospitals over the past year remained relatively flat, despite expectations to the contrary. The data spans a four-year period from 2009Q4 to 2013Q4. Overall, hospitals saw flat or no growth in utilization, but major teaching hospitals saw steady utilization growth.
In October 2013, S&P Dow Jones Indices (S&P DJI) launched the S&P Healthcare Claims Indices (the indices). This new index series is designed to provide an independent, timely measure of the changes in healthcare expenditures and utilization for individuals enrolled in commercial health insurance plans in the United States.
S&P DJI developed these new indices in conjunction with healthcare professionals at Health Index Advisors (HIA), a joint venture between the premier actuarial and consulting firms Aon Inc. and Milliman Inc. S&P DJI combined its knowledge and experience in developing leading indices with HIA’s experience in the healthcare market to develop the first index series of its kind, based on actual healthcare claims data. These indices seek to increase transparency in the healthcare market and enable the analysis and tracking of changes in healthcare expenditures.

First it was going to be October 1, 2013, and everybody panicked. Then a reprieve came when the date was changed to October 1, 2014, now we have another extension. You may not want to breathe a sigh of relief however and start thinking that there is now plenty of time to prepare for the transition to ICD-10. Time flies by and 2015 will be here before we know it. So don’t be left wondering where all the time went.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recently issued a new rule, effective September 2013, which updates OSHA’s 1971 workplace safety sign and tag formats with today’s best practice safety signage designs as defined by the latest American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Z535 standards.
The OSHA signage change means that, over time, as employers adopt the newer ANSI Z535 best practice safety tag and sign formats, the United States will increasingly have a single, national uniform system of hazard recognition. Safety signs installed in facilities and public
areas, temporary safety tags placed on equipment, and safety labels placed on products will all be designed using the same formatting principles.
The outcome of such consistency is expected to be significantly more effective communication in the workplace. That, in turn, should help achieve the objective of fewer accidents and more lives saved from tragedy.

On December 1, 2013, the United States Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) will start phasing in a mandatory transition to the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) for labeling potentially hazardous chemicals. The goal is to have one set of hazardous material classification standards used around the world to protect human health and promote environmental awareness.
The technology market is giving significant attention to Big Data and analytics as a way to provide insight for decision making support; but how far along is the adoption of these technologies across manufacturing organizations? During a February 2013 survey of over 100 manufacturers we examined behaviors of organizations that measure effective decision making as part of their enterprise performance management efforts. This Analyst Insight paper reveals the results of this survey.
This paper explores the results of a survey, fielded in April 2013, of 304 data managers and professionals, conducted by Unisphere Research, a division of Information Today Inc. It revealed a range of practical approaches that organizations of all types and sizes are adopting to manage and capitalize on the big data flowing through their enterprises.

Outdated systems, known internally as “the black hole,” plagued Jenny Craig with inefficient processes and created a lack of accountability. For example, records could not be categorized or prioritized properly, tracked by date or owner, and they could be intentionally hidden in an ambiguous status. Without visibility, Jenny Craig had no way to quantify the impact of their customer service. Mary Carter, manager of IT service, summed it up, “We had no reporting prior Cherwell Service Management.” Curves was in even worse shape as they logged tickets in an Excel® spreadsheet.
The world set a new record for data breaches in 2016,
with more than 4.2 billion exposed records, shattering the former record of 1.1 billion in 2013. But if 2016 was bad, 2017 is shaping up to be even worse. In the first six months of 2017, there were 2,227 breaches reported, exposing over 6 billion records and putting untold numbers of accounts at risk. Out of all these stolen records, a large majority include usernames and passwords, which are leveraged in 81 percent of hacking-related breaches according to the 2017 Verizon Data Breach Investigations Report. Between 2010 and 2013, the U.S. saw an estimated average of 48
electrocution fatalities associated with consumer products per year,
with large and small electric appliances chief among them1. Tragedies
like these can be avoided, especially when the ground fault circuit
interrupter (GFCI) technologies needed to prevent dangerous events
are readily available.
As the principle NEMA representative at the National Electrical Code
(NEC) Code-Making Panel Two, I saw public input asking for increased
GFCI protection for the home during the 2017 code cycle. The code
panel expanded the GFCI requirement for facilities other than dwelling
units as part of section NEC 210.8(B). However, residential standards
improvements were sidelined.
