Enterprises are leveraging advancements in what IDC calls “3rd Platform” technologies — cloud, Big Data, mobility, and social — to create new business opportunities and gain competitive advantage. These trends are putting more pressure on IT organizations to transform their datacenter operations to better support business initiatives aimed at reducing costs, increasing revenue, and strengthening customer relationships. This has driven increased demand for converged or integrated systems that provide the tools needed to reduce capital costs, improve operational efficiencies and, ultimately, increase agility within the datacenter.

It is no secret; security and compliance are at the top of the list of concerns tied to cloud adoption. According to a recent 2017 Cloud Security survey to over 350,000 members of the LinkedIn Information Security Community, IT pros have general concerns about security in the cloud (33 percent), in addition to data loss and leakage risks (26 percent) and legal and regulatory compliance (24 percent)1. The number of reported breaches in enterprise datacenter environments still far exceeds the reported exposure from cloud platforms, but as businesses start using public clouds to run their mission-critical workloads, the need for enterprise-grade security in the cloud will increase. Public cloud environments require a centralized, consolidated platform for security that is built from the ground up for the cloud, and allows administrators to monitor and actively enforce security policies. The tools and techniques that worked to secure datacenter environments fail miserably in the cloud. Se

As organizations begin to adopt public cloud, one element of consideration is what to do with existing applications. These applications were not built with cloud in mind, though most are virtualized today. These organizations must now determine a modernization strategy for these applications and incorporate how public cloud might fit into the picture. This paper examines the use of public cloud for data center extension and replacement, particularly in light of existing traditional enterprise applications. It also looks at the role of VMware's vCloud Air public cloud service in meeting the needs of these applications.

All companies, small and large, grapple with infrastructure growth and IT modernization. For many companies, datacenter infrastructure has become an essential part of a hybrid cloud environment that allows users to consume internal and external resources seamlessly. This, in turn, is helping modernize today's datacenters and drive new levels of agility, productivity, and scale. A common attribute of modern datacenter infrastructure is solutions that provide all compute and data services as a single system that can be managed holistically at a rack scale. IDC refers to such solutions as converged infrastructure.

Hyperconvergence has been receiving a tremendous amount of attention because it represents the next step in the evolution of IT resource delivery. This technology takes the idea of integrating compute, storage and networking that started with converged systems design and has improved on those architectures by adding deeper levels of abstraction and automation. Hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) vendors promise simplified operation and the ability to quickly and easily expand capacity by deploying and launching additional modules; simplicity has been the key selling point for the HCI pioneers. As HCI ventures even deeper into the enterprise and cloud environments, the architectures will need to become more efficient, agile and adaptable to help IT professionals shoulder the burden of rapidly growing data sets and workloads. This report discusses the benefits of HCI and the enhancements that must be made to expand HCI deeper into the mainstream enterprise datacenter.

Today’s mega IT trends – cloud computing, big data, mobile and social media –have dramatically altered how enterprises work, requiring datacenters to find new, more flexible and cost effective ways to meet computing demands. For most datacenters, the path toward tomorrow's compute paradigm mandates an investment in standardization and consolidation as well as a more robust adoption of enterprise virtualization software, along with cloud system software to extend that virtualized infrastructure into a true private cloud environment. Linux has emerged as one of the key elements to a modernization program for a datacenter.

The world of IT is undergoing a digital transformation. Applications are growing fast, and so are the users consuming them. These applications are everywhere—in the datacenter, on virtual and/or microservices platforms, in the cloud, and as SaaS. More and more apps are now being moved out of datacenters to a cloud-based infrastructure. In order for an optimized and secure delivery of these applications, IT needs specific network appliances called Application Delivery Controllers (ADCs). These ADCs come in hardware, virtual, and containerized form factors, and are sized by Network Administrators based on the current and future usage of applications. The challenge with this is that it’s hard to foresee sizing or scalability requirements for these ADCs since users are constantly increasing, and applications are consistently evolving, as well as moving out of datacenters. Complicating matters, most ADCs are fixed-capacity network appliances that provide zero or minimum expansion capability

Your clients and end users want instant access to their chosen applications — anytime, anywhere. To meet this demand, you have undoubtedly investigated cloud services. You know that with cloud services you should be able to turn up applications very quickly. You also expect cloud services will help you simplify operations and control costs. However, for cloud services to meet your expectations, the networks within and across datacenters must evolve to become as virtualized and readily available as the server and storage infrastructure.

Cloud, social, big data, and the Internet of Things (IoT) are increasingly central to business decisions as the pace of digitization accelerates. The impact of software-defined networking (SDN), virtualization, and converged and hyperconverged infrastructure within the datacenter is substantial. These technologies add complexity but offer enticing opportunities for new business models, revenue streams, operating efficiencies, and agility that organizations must pursue if they want to remain competitive and viable. This pursuit requires businesses to keep up with current and emerging technologies and applications and transform the ways in which they conduct business. At the core of "keeping up" is an organization's datacenter strategy — with an associated technology and services strategy that will either create industry laggards or accelerate innovators.

In reality, many applications are far from cloud ready, and some never will be. But almost every new application will be cloud enabled. So how do you evolve your data center into a private cloud and drive hybrid IT by connecting to public clouds, yet still cater for the needs of your legacy software? To try and understand the path to the cloud in greater detail, we’ve created this Infobrief from an extended interview conducted by the team at DatacenterDynamics with Juniper Networks’ Andy Ingram, the Global Vice President for Data Center and Cloud.
