While just about everyone is writing about how IT and the businesses it serves need to be transformed, the actual industry answers to both digital and IT transformation remain unclear at best. Are transformational initiatives all about analytics and big data? Or are they about the move to cloud in all its varieties? Support for mobile? More agile ways of working and developing software? Or are they actually all about crafting teams to promote more proactive dialog between the business and IT? The truth is, of course, digital and IT transformation depend on all of the above and more. They also depend on a resilient infrastructure that’s easily adapted to changing business priorities without requiring long hours spent on maintenance, updates, and addressing problems of service availability. But making all this work clearly and cohesively is far beyond the purview of almost any solution today—whether from a software management perspective or from a hardware infrastructure perspective.

In a market where compute and storage resources can be bought on demand with a credit card, vendors of on-premises hardware are seeking to tip the scales in their favor with ‘cloud-like’ pricing models that eliminate the need to commit capital to new platforms. At Dell EMC World in May, Dell Financial Services (DFS) rolled out Cloud Flex for HCI (hyperconverged infrastructure), part of the company’s push to evangelize the start-small-and-scale-up virtues of HCI technology. Cloud Flex lets customers acquire equipment on an all-opex basis, with no up-front product cost, steady monthly payments that reduce by up to 30% annually, and the ability to turn in equipment any time after 12 months without penalty. It’s part of a series of moves by Dell EMC meant to ease the financial risk of sticking with on-premises infrastructure in a cloud-enabled world

If your business uses a three-tier architecture with disaggregated servers, storage, and SAN to run applications, you might be considering upgrading to an integrated solution to streamline your business. However, implementing a hyperconverged Dell EMC XC Series cluster powered by Nutanix software is an even more attractive option that can provide over 73 percent greater database performance - an advantage that translates to 50 percent greater database performance per dollar than a traditional integrated solution.

Databases are often the driving force behind a company’s mission-critical work. They power online stores, confidential records, and customer management systems, so a solution that sustains high levels of database work can be a big advantage as your company grows. We found that the Dell EMC™ VxRail™ P470F hyperconverged system with VMware® vSAN™ could allow you to do more database work than the HPE Hyper Converged 380 (HC 380) with StoreVirtual VSA. The four-node Dell EMC solution processed more orders with faster response times, so more users can fulfill requests quicker—whether they’re placing orders in a store, accessing databases of client info, or adding to company records.

This paper presents the results of a three-year total cost of ownership (TCO) study comparing Dell EMC™ VxRail™ appliances and an equivalent do-it-yourself (DIY) solution of standalone server hardware and software from the VMware vSAN ReadyNode™ (hardware compatibility list) configurations. For both options, we modeled total hardware capital expense, total software capital expense and operational expense for small, medium and large clusters over a three-year period.

For many companies the appeal of the public cloud is very real. For tech startups, the cloud may be their only option, since many don’t have the capital or expertise to build and operate the IT systems their businesses need. Existing companies with established data centers are also looking at public clouds, to increase IT agility while limiting risk. The idea of building-out their production capacity while possibly reducing the costs attached to that infrastructure can be attractive. For most companies the cloud isn’t an “either-or” decision, but an operating model to be evaluated along with on-site infrastructure. And like most infrastructure decisions the question of cost is certainly a consideration. In this report we’ll explore that question, comparing the cost of an on-site hyperconverged solution with a comparable set up in the cloud. The on-site infrastructure is a Dell EMC VxRailTM hyperconverged appliance cluster and the cloud solution is Amazon Web Services (AWS).

The migration from a traditional enterprise IT infrastructure architecture with separate servers, separate traditional SAN, and separate hyperscale public cloud to an integrated hyperconverged architecture including Server SAN and an integrated hybrid cloud is a profound change. Wikibon explores the premise that the migration is justified, and the optimum hybrid cloud strategy is to use the same architecture and software for both the on-premises True Private Cloud and the public cloud services. Wikibon uses the term “True Hybrid Cloud” to describe this approach.

A common misconception about hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) is that because data services are software-defined, the hardware doesn’t matter. It’s easy to see why—the software driving HCI solutions such as the Dell EMC XC Series (in this case, Nutanix software) is exceptional. It efficiently manages data and communications across a cluster of nodes and storage tiers, keeping the cluster and virtual machines (VMs) up and running, delivering optimal performance and availability. Software-defined infrastructure is changing the way data services are delivered, making companies more efficient and agile, and reducing costs. Download the study to learn more about the latest trends. Intel Inside®. New Possibilities Outside.

Hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) is becoming a popular architecture choice, particularly for businesses consolidating infrastructure as part of a hybrid IT strategy to extend compute and storage resources outside the enterprise. At its current level of progress, HCI could soon become a foundation layer for the next generation of infrastructure at enterprises, midsized companies and remote deployments. Hybrid cloud is the next frontier for HCI, with most players looking to develop cloud orchestration and workload-migration capabilities to become hybrid cloud enablers for enterprises and service providers. Today, many organizations still have questions and uncertainty about HCI: What are the most effective uses of HCI today and in the future? Who benefits from HCI, and who doesn’t? What enterprise infrastructure challenges could be solved with HCI? This report will provide data and analysis to provide perspective on how the HCI market could be evolving, and to better understand

Technology is quickly moving to the forefront of business priorities as organizations undertake digital and IT transformation projects that enable strategic differentiation in a world where users leverage applications and data in new ways. Organizations in all industries must better align with changing customer preferences to avoid being disrupted by a new crop of nimble competitors. Technology will increasingly determine how businesses define and distinguish themselves in the market. IDC has noted that most organizations were not born digital but instead have legacy business processes, applications, and infrastructure that require modernization and automation. As a result, businesses must embark on an IT transformation initiative to modernize and automate their legacy infrastructure to prime themselves to achieve their digital business goals and initiatives. This paper is organized into sections describing the importance of IT infrastructure security and presents essential criteria IT leaders should use to identify end-to-end server security. 1. Trust and the Modern IT Infrastructure Why you should be concerned about server security (or the lack thereof). 2. End-to-end Server Security How Dell EMC defines end-to-end server security. In this section, we also provide crucial characteristics business and IT leaders can use to classify prospective server vendors. 3. Key Security Criteria for the Modern IT Infrastructure The security questions every IT leader should ask of their server vendor before embarking on an IT transformation. 4. Conclusion & Additional Resources The objective of this paper is to highlight the Dell EMC comprehensive approach to server security. PowerEdge servers come with security built-in, not bolted-on. Using a Cyber Resilient Architecture, Dell EMC commits to end-to-end server security on all PowerEdge servers.
