The tax on high-cost health plans, which are often referred to as Cadillac plans, is expected to impact a considerable share of the plans provided by healthcare organizations for their own employees, as much as 39% by 2020. The implications are significant because the excess-benefits tax requires the employer to pay 40% on the value of the portion of the plan that exceeds thresholds set by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Employers also need to consider that the tax is measured as a direct function of plan cost, and not actuarial plan value, and that a number of factors can drive excise-tax exposure.

The company has more than 169,000 employees working around the world, and its leaders estimate that within three years, as many as 60 percent of those employees will be Millennials. Critical to Unilever’s ongoing success will be its ability to attract these recent college graduates.
For its signature Future Leaders Programme, the company wanted its recruitment efforts to get ahead of the curve. The existing process was rooted in paper-based applications, phone interviews with recruiters, and manual assessment tests. It took four to six months to sift through 250,000 applications and ultimately hire 800 individuals. Early in my career, I worked on the shop floor at Home Depot. As part of my management training, I rotated into an assistant store manager position, and the team I found myself leading was full of highly experienced master-tradespeople. I quickly realised that my lovely college degree was of zero use when customers wanted to know how to fix their leaky taps or install new light fixtures.
