HealthLeaders' survey on workforce management queried leaders from a cross-section of U.S. healthcare organizations, including hospitals, health systems, physician organizations, and long-term care/skilled nursing facilities. The 150 respondents represent executives across all disciplines — administration, clinical, operations, finance, marketing, and information. In the next three to five years, hospitals, health systems, and other patient service providers expect to augment their time-and-attendance and payroll systems with integrated applications that enable more sophisticated data crunching around labor analytics, acuity management, and staffing assignments. The goal? To convert the workforce from overhead to asset — a flexible, agile asset that will help organizations succeed in an increasingly demanding regulatory and competitive environment.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recently issued a new rule, effective September 2013, which updates OSHA’s 1971 workplace safety sign and tag formats with today’s best practice safety signage designs as defined by the latest American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Z535 standards.
The OSHA signage change means that, over time, as employers adopt the newer ANSI Z535 best practice safety tag and sign formats, the United States will increasingly have a single, national uniform system of hazard recognition. Safety signs installed in facilities and public
areas, temporary safety tags placed on equipment, and safety labels placed on products will all be designed using the same formatting principles.
The outcome of such consistency is expected to be significantly more effective communication in the workplace. That, in turn, should help achieve the objective of fewer accidents and more lives saved from tragedy.
This research finds that huddle spaces deliver tremendous value to businesses, with 9 out of 10 participants stating the adoption of open space environments is increasing the need for these huddle spaces. Huddle spaces require a wide variety of technologies to enable users and the business, such as audio and video conferencing abilities, digital whiteboards and scheduling solutions. Users stated that ease of use, solution reliability, and similar technology in each huddle space is key to their productivity. A second use case would be where you already have a financial reporting solution installed, when the add-on facilities for purposes such as business intelligence are likely to be your major focus. In this case an Oracle based solution is likely to be as good as anything else.

Previous best practices for cleaning healthcare facilities centered on sanitizing frequently touched objects, such as bed rails or call buttons, because these objects were believed to be major sources of contagion. However, this new study finds that floors are the largest potential source of pathogens after reviewing five participating Cleveland-area hospitals.
Specifically, the following findings are highlighted in the study:
• Patient room floors in five hospitals were found to be contaminated with healthcare-associated pathogens.
• High-touch objects often came to be in direct contact with the floor.
• Touching objects on the floor frequently resulted in transfer of pathogens to hands.
• Floors in hospital rooms are overlooked as a source for pathogen dissemination, with potentially dangerous results.
The explosion in IT demand has intensified pressure on data center resources, making it difficult to respond to business needs, especially while budgets remain flat. As capacity demands become increasingly unpredictable, calculating the future needs of the data center becomes ever more difficult.
