Many premises-based phone system (PBX) manufacturers claim that the five year costs of their systems are lower than an equivalent cloud alternative. What the premises guys don’t tell you about is all the extra little hidden costs that come as a result of the limitations of the hardware and software in their systems. This guide will provide you with useful questions to ask your PBX manufacturer to ensure that you're getting the full picture on the cost of their system. Questions to Ask During an Evaluation: • Have you sized this system for my peak demand? • Have you factored in the cost of site redundancy? • How many hours of call recording are included? • How is mobility supported? Do calls route in an out of the PBX for call treatment? • What are the annual maintenance costs of the hardware and software in this system? • Which third party systems have you integrated this PBX with?

Oracle has just announced a new microprocessor, and the servers and engineered system that are powered by it. The SPARC M8 processor fits in the palm of your hand, but it contains the result of years of co-engineering of hardware and software together to run enterprise applications with unprecedented speed and security. The SPARC M8 chip contains 32 of today’s most powerful cores for running Oracle Database and Java applications. Benchmarking data shows that the performance of these cores reaches twice the performance of Intel’s x86 cores. This is the result of exhaustive work on designing smart execution units and threading architecture, and on balancing metrics such as core count, memory and IO bandwidth. It also required millions of hours in testing chip design and operating system software on real workloads for database and Java. Having faster cores means increasing application capability while keeping the core count and software investment under control. In other words, a boost

The Software in Silicon design of the SPARC M7 processor, and the recently announced SPARC S7 processor, implement memory access validation directly into the processor so that you can protect application data that resides in memory. It also includes on-chip Data Analytics Accelerator (DAX) engines that are specifically designed to accelerate analytic functions. The DAX engines make in-memory databases and applications run much faster, plus they significantly increase usable memory capacity by allowing compressed databases to be stored in memory without a performance penalty. The following Software in Silicon technologies are implemented in the SPARC S7 and M7 processors: Note: Security in Silicon encompasses both Silicon Secured Memory and cryptographic instruction acceleration, whereas SQL in Silicon includes In-Memory Query Acceleration and In-Line Decompression. Silicon Secured Memory is the first-ever end-to-end implementation of memory-access validation done in hardware. It

This whitepaper explores the new SPARC S7 server features and then compares this offering to a similar x86 offering. The key characteristics of the SPARC S7 to be highlighted are: ? Designed for scale-out and cloud infrastructures ? SPARC S7 processor with greater core performance than the latest Intel Xeon E5 processor ? Software in Silicon which offers hardware-based features such as data acceleration and security The SPARC S7 is then compared to a similar x86 solution from three different perspectives, namely performance, risk and cost. Performance matters as business markets are driving IT to provide an environment that: ? Continuously provides real-time results. ? Processes more complex workload stacks. ? Optimizes usage of per-core software licenses. Risk matters today and into the foreseeable future, as challenges to secure systems and data are becoming more frequent and invasive from within and from outside. Datacenter improvements have thus far focused on cost reduction and point solutions. Server consolidation, cloud computing, virtualization, and the implementation of flash storage capabilities have all helped reduce server sprawl, along with associated staffing and facilities costs. Converged systems — which combine compute, storage, and networking into a single system — are particularly effective in enabling organizations to reduce operational and staff expenses. These software-defined systems require only limited human intervention. Code imbedded in the software configures hardware and automates many previously manual processes, thereby dramatically reducing instances of human error. Concurrently, these technologies have enabled businesses to make incremental improvements to customer engagement and service delivery processes and strategies.
