In response to concerns raised by healthcare leaders that the absence of adjustment for socioeconomic status (SES) and race characteristics in patient populations impedes the fair comparison of hospitals on risk-standardized 30-day unplanned readmission rates, Truven Health AnalyticsTM evaluated the extent to which risk-adjusted readmission rates for acute myocardial infarction, heart failure, and pneumonia are affected by adjustments for community-level SES factors through its Community Need Index (CNI) and patient race. The study shows there is, indeed, a statistically significant effect. For more, visit truvenhealth.com/wp/readmissionpenalties.
The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality’s Patient Safety Indicators (PSI) are a set of metrics that provide information on the potential for inpatient hospital complications and adverse events following surgeries, procedures, and childbirth. PSIs can be used to help hospitals identify potential adverse events that might need further evaluation, provide the opportunity to assess the incidence of adverse events and complications, and understand patient safety events on a broader level.
The Truven Health Analytics 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals study identifies hospitals that achieve the best performance on a scorecard of performance measures. This year, based on comparisons between the winners and a peer group of similar high-volume hospitals that were not winners, the study found that if all cardiovascular providers performed at the level of this year’s winners, approximately 9,500 additional patients could survive, more than $1 billion could be saved, and almost 3,000 additional bypass and angioplasty patients could be complication-free. This is based on an analysis of Medicare patients; if the same standards were applied to all inpatients, the impact would be even greater.
The Truven Health Analytics 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals study identifies U.S. hospitals that have achieved the best performance on a balanced scorecard of performance measures. Based on comparisons between study winners and a peer group of similar hospitals that were not winners, winners are achieving better outcomes while operating more efficiently and at a lower cost. If all cardiovascular providers performed at the same level of this year’s winners, almost 8,000 additional lives could be saved; nearly 3,500 heart patients could be complication free; and more than $1.3 billion could be saved.
Creating a state-of-the-art clinical documentation improvement (CDI) program isn’t just about boosting coding accuracy. It’s a key strategy in managing the transition from volume-based to value-based care, say healthcare leaders. That transition is a risky endeavor that is putting hospital and physician financial performance to the test. As hospitals participate in new care and business models aimed at improving value, leaders must ensure that their organizations are able to maintain reimbursement levels, effectively treat the chronically ill—especially in outpatient settings—and gather accurate data that will allow them to assess performance and segment their varying populations. While some organizations often believe they are leaving revenue on the table because of documentation and coding issues, CDI offers numerous opportunities for improving financial performance, finds a recent HealthLeaders Media survey of 149 healthcare executives at provider organizations.

It explores the limitations of targeted software solutions to provide cross-enterprise insights. Finally, it provides advice for healthcare executives regarding how to approach gathering quality and cost-related data and how to leverage technology and analytical expertise to drive risk-based contract success.
Despite massive spend to protect enterprise digital assets, security breaches are still on the rise. The disconnect between the level of investment and the volume and impact of attacks is largely attributed to outdated approaches that favor perimeter protection and point solutions despite a digital supply chain that is more distributed than ever. For these reasons and more, enterprises need to start thinking differently about cybersecurity. Security doesn’t need new products. It needs a new model. One that applies the principles of intrinsic security across the fabric of the organization, from the sales floor to the C-suite, from the infrastructure to the endpoint device. In this Essential Guidance executive brief, learn how intrinsic security differs from traditional security methods, and the steps CIOs need to take to operationalize this model for greater business agility without greater risk.
Safeguarding the identity of users and managing the level of access they have to critical business applications could be the biggest security challenge organizations face in today’s assumed breach world.

Over 6,500 publicly disclosed data breaches occurred in 2018 alone, exposing over 5 billion records—a large majority of which included usernames and passwords.1 This wasn’t new to 2018 though, as evidenced by
the existence of an online, searchable database of 8 billion username and password combinations that have been stolen over the years (https://haveibeenpwned.com/), keeping in mind there are only 4.3 billion people worldwide that have internet access.
These credentials aren’t stolen just for fun—they are the leading attack type for causing a data breach. And the driving force behind the majority of credential attacks are bots—malicious ones—because they enable cybercriminals to achieve scale. That’s why prioritizing secure access and bot protection needs to be part of every organ

Mountains of data promise valuable insights and innovation for businesses that rethink and redesign their system architectures. But companies that don’t re-architect might find themselves scrambling just to keep from being buried in the avalanche of data.
The problem is not just in storing raw data, though. For businesses to stay competitive, they need to quickly and cost-effectively access and process all that data for business insights, research, artificial intelligence (AI), and other uses. Both memory and storage are required to enable this level of processing, and companies struggle to balance high costs against limited capacities and performance constraints.
The challenge is even more daunting because different types of memory and storage are required for different workloads. Furthermore, multiple technologies might be used together to achieve the optimal tradeoff in cost versus performance.
Intel is addressing these challenges with new memory and storage technologies that emp

2017 and 2018 were not easy years to be a CIO or CISO, and 2019 isn’t showing any signs of being easier. With so many career-ending-level data breaches in 2017 (e.g., Equifax, Uber, Yahoo, to name a few) and with the stronger regulatory requirements worldwide, CIOs/CISOs have a corporate responsibility to rethink their approach to data security. Regulatory compliance aside, companies have a responsibility to their customers and shareholders to protect data, and minimize its exposure not only to external attackers but also to employees. The most common method of data breach in 2017 was a phishing email sent to a company’s internal employees (See 2017 Data Breach Investigation Report), This makes employees unwillingly complicit in the data breach. Over 80% of successful cyberattacks have a critical human element that enabled them. The average employee who opens the innocent-looking attachment or link, is unintentionally jeopardizing a company’s data. While there is no 100% protection, th
Data is the DNA of modern healthcare. As healthcare technology continues to evolve at a rapid pace, and patient data management and security evolve, emerging approaches for disease treatment and prevention—like precision medicine and healthcare content management—are becoming more necessary. Precision medicine is about moving from generic to more precise, population-focused diagnostics and treatment by factoring in data from patients’ genes, environment, lifestyle factors and family history, into clinical decision-making for earlier, more accurate diagnoses, and more effective treatment and prevention. Data is at the heart of enabling doctors and scientists to execute on this mission. Additionally, rapidly changing regulations throughout the world are affecting the management of all healthcare data. Infinidat removes data management barriers from this level of data interaction by removing isolated islands of storage and allowing much more data to reside on a single, high-performance, h

In today’s digital world, technologies such as cloud have become commonplace to take digital transformation projects to the next level. But while cloud is critical to business transformation success, Australian IT decision-makers (ITDMs) still feel that the C-suite does not understand the time and complexity of the journey.
This paper explores:
• Insights on challenges faced by Australian ITDMs when rolling out cloud projects
• The role of the ITDM today
• Key blockages IT stakeholders encounter when driving digital change, and;
• What they need from the business and wider technology ecosystem to navigate the risks associated with starting a cloud project or moving to a full cloud-first model.
