"Healthcare organizations have significantly more to consider than the average business when it comes to network and device security. Concern over code modification, key compromise, password-based vulnerabilities and man-in-the-middle attacks have caused hospital CIOs and CISOs to rethink their security strategies and investments. The threat to these devices has even been assigned its own term: medjacking, a shortened form of “medical device hijacking.” Download this white paper for five best practices to mitigate threat and attacks that can put lives, patient trust and the growth of the healthcare organization at risk. In most use cases involving flash storage deployments, the business environment changes, driving a need for higher-performance storage. However, the case of Epic Systems Corporation software is the opposite—the storage requirements haven’t changed recently, but the options for addressing them have. Epic, a privately-held company founded in 1979 and based in Verona,Wisconsin, makes applications for medical groups, hospitals and other healthcare organizations. Epic software typically exhibits high frequency, random storage accesses with stringent latency requirements. IBM has been working with Epic to develop host-side and storage-side solutions to meet these requirements. Extensive testing has demonstrated that the combination of IBM® POWER8™ servers and IBM FlashSystem™ storage more than meets the performance levels Epic recommends for the backend storage supporting its software implementations—at a cost point multiple times lower than other storage alternatives.

Health care is often considered a lucrative business for those involved in waste, fraud and abuse. Today’s ever-accelerating technology changes make data related to health care, medical and financial issues even more attractive (and profitable) to cybercriminals who sell medical identities and siphon money from stolen financial records. Risks are exponentially increased because of organizations’ reliance on electronic systems for mission-critical functions. According to 61% of respondents to the SANS 2014 State of Cybersecurity in Health Care Organizations survey, medical/health record systems are considered the most at-risk information asset among the 224 health care-related organizations represented in the survey.

There is a lot of discussion in the press about Big Data. Big Data is traditionally defined in terms of the three V’s of Volume, Velocity, and Variety. In other words, Big Data is often characterized as high-volume, streaming, and including semi-structured and unstructured formats. Healthcare organizations have produced enormous volumes of unstructured data, such as the notes by physicians and nurses in electronic medical records (EMRs). In addition, healthcare organizations produce streaming data, such as from patient monitoring devices. Now, thanks to emerging technologies such as Hadoop and streams, healthcare organizations are in a position to harness this Big Data to reduce costs and improve patient outcomes. However, this Big Data has profound implications from an Information Governance perspective. In this white paper, we discuss Big Data Governance from the standpoint of three case studies.
