The outlook for online electronics sales is bright, with global sales set to surpass $300 billion in 2018, a 10.7% increase over 2017. The US and Europe are anticipating healthy growth as customers (particularly millennials) become more comfortable making larger purchases online: Best Buy’s 2017 Q4 revenue from online sales in the US was up 17.9% over the previous year. But the largest contributor to this surge will be China, where the enormous population is rapidly adapting to shopping online.

What began in the 1990s as innocent pranks designed to uncover holes in Windows servers and other platforms soon led to hacker Kevin Mitnick causing millions of dollars in malicious damages, landing him in prison for half a decade and raising the awareness of cybersecurity enough to jump-start a multimillion-dollar antivirus industry. Then came the script kiddies, unskilled hackers who used malicious code written by others to wreak havoc, often just for bragging rights. If only that were still the case.

Omnichannel is one of those words everyone uses, but few use correctly. It’s not another word for multichannel. It’s a different state of existence. In our experience, multichannel is the ability to interact with customers across many different channels, but not necessarily in a cohesive fashion. As new channels become available, they are “bolted on” to existing customer experience infrastructure such as CRM or customer support systems. Too frequently, the management of these channels becomes siloed (web versus in-store sales, for example). The effect of this from the customer experience standpoint can be disjointed and jarring.
