Creating a successful patient experience strategy is a long-term investment in planning, surveying, training, and technology. Healthcare organizations hope these efforts will pay off at the very least with a growing base of loyal patients, better care quality, and stable reimbursement. And then there are those organizations that are turning patient experience into a movement. What’s their endgame? They intend to build state-of-the-art service-oriented cultures that rival other industries, and they are doing it through data analytics, unique communication programs, radical cultural shifts, and consumer-centric technologies. In response to concerns raised by healthcare leaders that the absence of adjustment for socioeconomic status (SES) and race characteristics in patient populations impedes the fair comparison of hospitals on risk-standardized 30-day unplanned readmission rates, Truven Health AnalyticsTM evaluated the extent to which risk-adjusted readmission rates for acute myocardial infarction, heart failure, and pneumonia are affected by adjustments for community-level SES factors through its Community Need Index (CNI) and patient race. The study shows there is, indeed, a statistically significant effect. For more, visit truvenhealth.com/wp/readmissionpenalties.

HealthLeaders' survey on workforce management queried leaders from a cross-section of U.S. healthcare organizations, including hospitals, health systems, physician organizations, and long-term care/skilled nursing facilities. The 150 respondents represent executives across all disciplines — administration, clinical, operations, finance, marketing, and information. In the next three to five years, hospitals, health systems, and other patient service providers expect to augment their time-and-attendance and payroll systems with integrated applications that enable more sophisticated data crunching around labor analytics, acuity management, and staffing assignments. The goal? To convert the workforce from overhead to asset — a flexible, agile asset that will help organizations succeed in an increasingly demanding regulatory and competitive environment.

We have conditioned patients not only to expect opioids for pain relief, but to utilize more and more of them, and the addiction is both psychological and physical. To remedy the situation, a lot of policies and practices and behaviors must change around how the health care system approaches pain. But we do not yet have the data and analytics we need to determine what specifically to do at the patient level or the policy level. Download this whitepaper to learn more about the resources available and how we can fix this issue.

Predictive analytics have been used by different industries for years to solve difficult problems that range from detecting credit card fraud to determining patient risk levels for medical conditions. It combines data mining and machine-learning technologies to create statistical models based on historical data. It then uses these models to predict future events. Extracting the power from the data requires powerful algorithms behind predictive analytics.

With the right EHR in place, participation in health care quality management programs not only helps you provide great care to your patients, but can also help increase your bottom line. However, the rewards are only worth seeking if the cost—in time and money—of collecting and reporting data to these quality programs doesn't outrun the potential gain. This is where your EHR and the services provided by your EHR vendor can make a significant difference.

Traditional EMRs consistently fail to help physicians make more money, do less work, and deliver better care. High up-front fees with traditional EMRs are one factor, but the greatest problem with traditional EMRs is that they are designed without an understanding of the fundamental economics of a patient encounter.

Often, a hospital’s revenue cycle is comprised of several departments that are managed and monitored separately. The lack of visibility of overall performance can impact cash flow and the patient experience. RelayHealth financial solutions offer a panoramic view of the revenue cycle while also providing the ability to drill down for microscopic focus on certain challenges. Using analytics to identify and prioritize improvement opportunities, financial executives can then implement RelayHealth’s other revenue cycle solutions to help solve problems and improve financial outcomes.

Speed is the hallmark of the digital age. E-commerce has grown by double-digits since 2010,¹ spurred by the expansion of quick delivery. The healthcare industry, buoyed by online diagnostic tools and patient analytics, has been experiencing record-breaking growth.² And on-demand online learning is experiencing its 13th consecutive year of growth.³ These trends are not unique. “Digital disruption” is no longer a futurist’s fantasy, it is happening now. Yet talent acquisition lags feebly behind. It takes an average of 43 days for a US company to fill an open position, up from 33 in 2010. That’s right- filling empty positions takes companies longer than ever before, in spite of technological progress. The pace of business is speeding up, but HR is actually slowing down. Nearly every major industry has leveraged digital transformation to their advantage and reaped massive rewards- why not HR?

Physicians and their patients, medical policy makers and licensing boards, pharmaceutical companies and pharmacies all must work together to stem the opioid epidemic and achieve the fundamental objectives of reducing addiction and deaths. With so many players and data sources, today’s information is partial, fragmented, and often not actionable. We don’t have the data to understand what’s happening, to adjust policy, and to motivate physicians and patients to change their behaviors. Better data and analytics can help develop better treatment protocols, both for pain in the first place and for remediation when patients are becoming dependent on the drugs.

With decisions riding on the timeliness and quality of analytics, business stakeholders are less patient with delays in the development of new applications that provide reports, analysis, and access to diverse data itself. Executives, managers, and frontline personnel fear that decisions based on old and incomplete data or formulated using slow, outmoded, and limited reporting functionality will be bad decisions. A deficient information supply chain hinders quick responses to shifting situations and increases exposure to financial and regulatory risk—putting a business at a competitive disadvantage. Stakeholders are demanding better access to data, faster development of business intelligence (BI) and analytics applications, and agile solutions in sync with requirements.
