Year after year, studies show that businesses with higher engagement also have higher performance, and vice versa. The
goals of high engagement and high performance are not mutually exclusive; they are mutually dependent. A team of
employees works at its optimum when management focuses on employee engagement while remaining performance oriented.

Employers should take note that a significant number of legal changes on the federal, state and local level have or will
have a substantial impact on workplace policies and employee handbooks. It is critical for an employer to review, amend
and properly update its handbook for 2018 so that it reflects the latest legal requirements.
An employer also needs to understand what the legal update is and how it affects the workplace, as well as develop
and implement policies, practices and procedures to remain compliant. Further, an employer may need to update its
employee handbook based on internal changes (e.g., benefits, performance management).
Below are relevant XpertHR resources, including Employee Handbook policy statements, to assist an employer in
updating its own handbook.
This Case Study details how the Jive HR team drove an initiative to transform the existing performance management process into a people-first program, resulting in one that delivers value and drives engagement.
High-performing organizations operate differently than those of the past. These companies have rebuilt their performance management process to optimize for driving performance and developing employees.
Part 2 of the eBook series, Performance Management for High-Performance Cultures, outlines how you can empower employees to own their development, in order to increase engagement and drive performance forward.
Performance Management: The Practice Everyone Loves to Hate
Let’s start with some real talk: Performance management is a topic that strikes fear into the hearts of most people in the HR field (not to mention managers and employees!). Most companies care about it, but few have figured out how to do it well. Research from CEB found that managers spend up to 200 hours per year on performance documentation, and a company of 10,000 spends an estimated $35 million a year to conduct reviews. Despite this huge investment of time and money, there is minimal return. Reviews don’t drive engagement or performance—and 95% of managers are dissatisfied with the way their companies conduct performance reviews.
Different finance departments want different financial solutions. Some may simply require financial reporting while, at the other end of the spectrum, some will want a comprehensive performance management solution. This paper compares different approaches to these choices that are available for the JD Edwards EnterpriseOne and World Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) environments. The offerings in this space range from simple reporting tools to complete, integrated solutions. While noting the value that targeted toolsets provide, a survey of the available offerings suggests that most organisations are better served by implementing a holistic, integrated approach rather than a hybrid, multivendor approach.
Don’t settle. Forward-thinking finance professionals know that there is a better way. Though BI tools have provided visibility to data, they have in fact failed to provide direct access to enterprise information. However, evolution does not stop there: Next-gen corporate performance management solutions are among us and promise to deliver interconnected, flexible, and realtime data access. Agility achieved.
