The ripple effect of healthcare reform is beginning to impact care delivery strategies as care management now falls increasingly to providers. According to a recent HealthLeaders Intelligence survey, hospital leaders are making progress with care management efforts, but more robust tools will be needed if hospitals want to scale up. The October 2014 survey polled 134 senior, clinical, operations, finance, marketing, and information leaders across the healthcare spectrum. The majority of respondents were from nonprofit organizations (63%), while the remainder (37%) came from for-profit settings.

A recent HealthLeaders Media Intelligence survey asked respondents to rank their top challenges impacting financial performance and to identify specific areas of concern within each of those issues. Their top three issues were system implementation and interoperability, recruiting and retaining talent, and reengineering the revenue cycle. On the surface, it’s tempting to think these findings aren’t surprising. Yet emerging external factors, including the cumulative effects of the HITECH Act (meaningful use), the Affordable Care Act, and an aging U.S. population, are creating new frameworks in which to view and solve these traditional problems.

HealthLeaders' survey on workforce management queried leaders from a cross-section of U.S. healthcare organizations, including hospitals, health systems, physician organizations, and long-term care/skilled nursing facilities. The 150 respondents represent executives across all disciplines — administration, clinical, operations, finance, marketing, and information. In the next three to five years, hospitals, health systems, and other patient service providers expect to augment their time-and-attendance and payroll systems with integrated applications that enable more sophisticated data crunching around labor analytics, acuity management, and staffing assignments. There’s strong evidence organizations are challenged by the opportunities presented by external information sources such as social media, government trend data, and sensor data from the Internet of Things (IoT). No longer content to use internal databases alone, they see big data resources augmented with external information resources as what they need in order to bring about meaningful change. According to a September 2015 global survey of 251 respondents conducted by Harvard Business Review Analytic Services, 78 percent of organizations agree or strongly agree that within two years the use of externally generated big data will be “transformational.” But there’s work to be done, since only 21 percent of respondents strongly agree that external data has already had a transformational effect on their firms.

Ponemon Institute surveyed 569 individuals in IT security who are familiar with credential stuffing and are responsible for the security of their companies’ Internet properties. The survey identified key stats about credential stuffing, including the costs organizations incur to prevent damage, and the financial consequences when attackers succeed. According to respondents, these attacks cause costly application downtime, loss of customers, and involvement of IT security that can result in a cost of millions of dollars. The survey highlights the challenges in identifying who is accessing their websites using stolen credentials, as well as the difficulty in preventing and remediating these attacks.

Unlike surveys that just look at what respondents say at a specific point in time, the BPTrends survey has been asking questions of process practitioners for over a decade. Thus, we are in a good position to generalize about ongoing trends in process work. Broadly speaking, the interest in business process change has evolved slowly. For some organizations the progress has been dramatic, but for most, their process initiatives are best described by the phrase “two steps forward; one step back.” An amazing number of organizations have focused on process work for several years, made significant progress, then, seemingly forgotten all about their process work, regressed, and then, a few years later, started up again.
