The annual Truven Health 100 Top Hospitals® identifies U.S. hospitals with the best overall performance across multiple organizational metrics, including clinical, operational, and financial. The ability of some hospitals to adapt as the industry is changing demonstrates leadership as the winners set the standards their peers seek to achieve. Study projections indicate that if the new national benchmarks of high performance were achieved by all hospitals in the United States, nearly 126,500 additional lives could be saved, almost 109,000 additional patients could be complication-free, and $1.8 billion in inpatient costs could be saved.
The Truven Health Analytics 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals study identifies hospitals that achieve the best performance on a scorecard of performance measures. This year, based on comparisons between the winners and a peer group of similar high-volume hospitals that were not winners, the study found that if all cardiovascular providers performed at the level of this year’s winners, approximately 9,500 additional patients could survive, more than $1 billion could be saved, and almost 3,000 additional bypass and angioplasty patients could be complication-free. This is based on an analysis of Medicare patients; if the same standards were applied to all inpatients, the impact would be even greater.

When the IASB and FASB issued a joint press release on May 28, 2014 1 announcing new revenue recognition standards for revenue from contracts with customers, the adoption deadline seemed a long way off. After pushback from companies across various industries, the implementation date was extended by one year, granting companies more time to update their policies and systems to adhere to the new standards.
There’s no getting around it. Passed in May 2016, the European Union (EU) General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) replaces the minimum standards of the Data Protection Directive, a 21-year-old system that allowed the 28 EU member states to set their own data privacy and security rules relating to the information of EU subjects. Under the earlier directive, the force and power of the laws varied across the continent. Not so after GDPR went into effect May 25, 2018.
Under GDPR, organizations are subject to new, uniform data protection requirements—or could potentially face hefty fines. So what factors played into GDPR’s passage?

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recently issued a new rule, effective September 2013, which updates OSHA’s 1971 workplace safety sign and tag formats with today’s best practice safety signage designs as defined by the latest American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Z535 standards.
The OSHA signage change means that, over time, as employers adopt the newer ANSI Z535 best practice safety tag and sign formats, the United States will increasingly have a single, national uniform system of hazard recognition. Safety signs installed in facilities and public
areas, temporary safety tags placed on equipment, and safety labels placed on products will all be designed using the same formatting principles.
The outcome of such consistency is expected to be significantly more effective communication in the workplace. That, in turn, should help achieve the objective of fewer accidents and more lives saved from tragedy.

improvements were sidelined.
