Startups with digital products are not commonly known to pursue small dreams. Once the basic idea of the product is designed and the industry niche has been identified, leadership is already thinking hard about where and to how many markets the product should be rolled out. The mission is critical: the product must clearly create added value for the user in the local market while reflecting the needs of their local community. The challenge is making those changes in each market without losing sight of the basic idea of the product. The success story of German ecommerce startup Yalwa - The Local Internet Company details three best practices on how young startups can realize the dream of a localized, and thus globally-positioned, digital product.

As the threat landscape evolves, so must our security controls and countermeasures. Recent research from F5 Labs revealed that applications are the initial targets in the majority of breaches, suggesting that any app can be an attack vector. Cybercriminals are moving their tactics further up the stack using sophisticated application-layer exploits, as well as an emerging wave of automated, bot, and IoTbased threats that are quite capable of evading simple signature or reputation-based detection. Yet, the majority of WAFs on the market today have remained largely unchanged, leaving the applayer exposed, unable to proactively monitor and protect against evolving attack vectors.

Today’s tech savvy consumers are continually driving organizations to deliver a modernized shopping experience. To achieve this, retailers are pushing the edge on developing non-traditional ways in delivering sales messages. One of the best ways to engage shoppers with an in-store digital presence is through modern adaptive signages. Modern signages enable two-way interaction between customers and businesses, tapping onto cutting-edge technologies such as sensors and analytics to respond to customer behavior—helping retailers customize content on the fly. Find out how Giada Technology leveraged on Intel® processors to power up their cloud terminals to pre-process signage, sensor, and mobile data to efficiently exchange information with the cloud. Labeling blood and other samples at the time they are collected improves patient safety and helps prevent a host of problems related to misidentification — including many of the estimated 160,900 adverse events that occur in U.S. hospitals annually because of sample identification errors.1 There is a strong and growing body of evidence within medical literature that creating specimen identification labels on demand at the patient bedside with a mobile printer can significantly reduce errors. The Joint Commission’s National Patient Safety Goals (NPSG) for 2010 advocate the use of two patient-specific identifiers, such as name and birthdate, whenever taking blood or other samples from a patient, and to label the sample collection container in the presence of the patient. Producing specimen labels at the patient bedside and encoding patient identification in a barcode satisfies both The Joint Commission’s NPSG and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) requirements. Welcome to the very first edition of Modern Monitoring, a collection of articles and insights designed to help IT operations and DevOps professionals deliver more resilient, supportable and high-performance IT services. It’s perhaps a sign of the times that monitoring as a discipline is receiving much more attention within the biz tech community. And deservedly so. The new distributed application architectures being built, together with the dizzying pace of software delivery, demand new approaches in what’s traditionally been perceived as a “keeping the lights on” IT practice. Of course, there’s no better way to consider monitoring than to draw parallels with other practices in related fields. It’s why we’ve included a couple of pieces with a distinct aeronautical flavor that discuss importance of instrumentation and contextual awareness.

Today’s consumers are more informed, diverse, demanding and well-connected than ever before. With nearly unrestricted access to shopping resources used for discovery, comparison, and purchase, consumers are able to shop at will, often independent of branded retailer guidance. This rise of consumer independence can be attributed to the emergence of technological advancements favoring consumer empowerment; however, the repeated failures of brands to proactively offer personalized, high-value shopping experiences at scale is a significant contributing factor of consumer exodus. This has fostered an inclination among shoppers to become self-reliant in their pursuit of purchases, effectively shutting out promotional outreach from brands. Many brands continue to fall out of touch with their customers because they’ve lost sight of their customers’ true needs. Customer centricity has long been the foundation for modern marketing, but the brands which fail at creating deeply personalized market

About $3.7 trillion is spent annually in consumer purchases in the United States, according to Deloitte. But it’s often forgotten that only 8% of that is spent on e-commerce. This means that offline brick-and-mortar spending is where the true scale occurs. In order to support consistent franchise growth for your business, digital strategies must be designed to impact every stage of the franchising life cycle.

When designed well, a data lake is an effective data-driven design pattern for capturing a wide range of data types, both old and new, at large scale. By definition, a data lake is optimized for the quick ingestion of raw, detailed source data plus on-the-fly processing of such data for exploration, analytics and operations. Even so, traditional, latent data practices are possible, too. Organizations are adopting the data lake design pattern (whether on Hadoop or a relational database) because lakes provision the kind of raw data that users need for data exploration and discovery-oriented forms of advanced analytics. A data lake can also be a consolidation point for both new and traditional data, thereby enabling analytics correlations across all data. To help users prepare, this TDWI Best Practices Report defines data lake types, then discusses their emerging best practices, enabling technologies and real-world applications. The report’s survey quantifies user trends and readiness f

Today’s factory intelligence is the collaborative orchestration of people and machines. By blending intelligence from multiple sources, factories are truly becoming smarter. But it’s not just about the machines. Rather, people are improving machines through a true partnership that turns human experience into smarter machines. This shift marks a re?orientation to a thought process that’s more natural to people. After decades of working with 2D blueprints, designs and dimensioned drawings, factory intelligence leverages 3D models that are easier for people to comprehend and use. Plus, many people find more satisfaction in intelligent factory work that challenges them to manage relationships among machines, rather than repeatedly working on a single piece in a line. In smarter factories, people direct machines to adjust for shifting customer requirements and market demands.
