Enterprise conferencing and collaboration technologies today stand at an exciting crossroads. Solutions that were once considered consumer technologies are moving into the enterprise. Never has this trend been more pronounced than now, as consumerization of IT and mobile device proliferation increasingly break down the walls between business and consumer use. As a result, enterprise solutions must become increasingly simpler to deploy and more intuitive to use. At the same time they must deliver a secure and seamless communications experience. As the worlds of consumer and business communications blend, walking the line between the two has become top of mind for users and IT decision makers alike. Businesses must capitalize on these tectonic shifts in user preferences by deploying agile communications that today’s mobile users need in order to collaborate effectively wherever they are.

Digital security has never taken on greater urgency. Today we live in a fundamentally connected ecosystem where we increasingly work, play, and indeed live most of our lives online. Whether we are enterprise users or endpoint consumers, our digital experiences are increasingly delivered to us on our connected devices - wherever we are, whenever we want them. For InfoSec professionals, this interconnected ecosystem is wreaking havoc with the idea of "the perimeter." In fact, the perimeter as we know it no longer exits. The attack surface is always shifting and continues to disperse across a wider area. At the same time, attacks continue to grow in size and volume, and are increasingly targeted. No longer can you secure the perimeter and trust that nothing will get in or out. What you need to deploy and manage is being redefined right before your eyes, with or without you. You need to take security to the edge.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is composed of sensor-embedded devices and machines that exchange data with each other and the cloud through a secure network. Often referred to as “things” or “edge devices”, these intelligent machines connect to the internet either directly or through an IoT gateway, enabling them to send data to the cloud. Analyzing this data can reveal valuable insights about these objects and the business processes they’re part of, helping enterprises optimize their operations. Devices in IoT deployments can span nearly any industry or use case. Each one is equipped with sensors, processing power, connectivity, and software, enabling asset control and other remote interactions over the internet. Unlike traditional IT assets, these edge devices are resource-constrained (either by bandwidth, storage, or processing power) and are typically found outside of a data center, creating unique security and management considerations.

To best support global users and customers, enterprises require seamlessly connectivity between branch office locations, applications, and workloads hosted in the cloud. Many WAN solutions are ill-equipped for this task because they are generally rigid, complex to configure, and expensive to maintain. IoT adoption, a dramatic increase of the number of network devices, and the sophistication of security threats further compounds this challenge. Geographically-distributed devices need secure cloud connectivity, limiting the ability of existing WAN solutions to fulfill the need of distributed organizations. Cisco SD-WAN on Amazon Web Services (AWS) is an overlay WAN architecture that is designed to address modern enterprise cloud applications and workloads, heterogeneous WAN connectivity, distributed global workforces, and other business needs that traditional WAN solutions cannot meet. Enabling the mobile workforce to be productive is the ultimate goal of any mobile business initiative. While the idea that mobile devices like the iPad, Galaxy Tab and today’s leading smartphones can change how users work in the enterprise is well established, the real challenge is how to enable a mobile workforce to have device access to all the different content they need to do their job without having to circumvent security and content governance objective or require users to learn a mix of consumer oriented software tools and work in different user interfaces in order to be productive. Viewing, editing, annotating and sharing content must be available from the same application.
