Compiling a cloud services comparison is a daunting task in the rapidlyevolving cloud environment. There are thousands of cloud services, dozens of cloud service providers, and numerous Infrastructure-as-aService (IaaS) providers offering pay-as-you-go pricing models—each one frequently changing and upgrading their portfolios. We have chosen to limit our cloud services comparison to the top three IaaS providers providing service in the Western Hemisphere—Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform (GCP)—because, not only are these the IaaS providers most organizations are familiar with, they are also the IaaS providers whose services most organizations are likely to compare. This eBook provides an introduction to the range of services offered by the leading cloud service providers, information on regions and availability zones, a breakdown of cloud storage services, and more, to help inform you on your multicloud journey.

The less you hear about your building’s network, the better. Enterprise networks rarely make the news unless the news is bad—and an unplanned outage is about as bad as it gets. In 2017, a tech’s typo at one of the world’s largest cloud services providers took a large swath of servers offline for four agonizing hours. According to one estimate, it cost S&P 500 companies $150 million—and U.S. financial-service companies $160 million—in lost revenue. Of course, the financial hit is just one aspect of an outage. The true cost also includes lost productivity and damage to your reputation. As our reliance on ITC infrastructure increases, the cost of an unplanned outage will only go up.

Companies with multicloud services are outperforming their peers on a number of metrics — and achieving the key objectives that led them to the cloud services model. Take a look at the IT ecosystem of any company today and there’s a good chance you’ll find it includes offerings from several cloud services providers. That’s certainly the case at mid- to large-sized companies with at least 500 employees, according to a recent survey conducted by IDG Research. The survey of 100 senior IT professionals found that 59% are already multi-cloud adopters — that is, using computing and storage services from two or more cloud providers. Another 31% of respondents say they plan to become multi-cloud organizations in the coming 12-24 months, with only 10% still in the “consideration” phase. The survey results also reveal interesting insights into the drivers behind multicloud adoption. The perennial desire to reduce IT costs remains important, but the respondents rate two other factors.

Microsoft Azure is a public cloud platform featuring powerful on-demand infrastructure and solutions for building and deploying applications workloads as well as a wide variety of IT and application services. You can use Azure as a public cloud provider and as a hybrid extension to existing on-premises infrastructure. Organizations that use Microsoft solutions on-premises are able to extend their infrastructure and operational processes to Azure. With the growing popularity of Azure, today’s systems administrators need to acquire and strengthen their skills on this fast-growing public cloud platform. In this guide we explore the Azure public cloud platform with a focus on the Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) features. We cover general architectural features of the Azure cloud including geographic regions, availability zones, and Service Level Agreements (SLAs) attached to the core Azure IaaS infrastructure.

A multi-cloud world is quickly becoming the new normal for many enterprises. But embarking on a cloud journey and managing cloud-based services across multiple providers can seem overwhelming. Even the term multi-cloud can be confusing. Multi-cloud is not the same as hybrid cloud. The technical definition of hybrid cloud is an environment that includes traditional data centers with physical servers, private cloud with virtualized servers as well as public cloud provisioned by service providers. Quite often, multi-cloud simply means that an organization uses multiple public clouds from many vendors to deliver its IT services. In other words, organizations can have a multi-cloud without having a hybrid cloud, or they can have a multi-cloud as part of a hybrid cloud.

Effective security for cloud-hosted web applications requires full visibility into the environment in which the apps live and the potential exposure to vulnerabilities — and to do so consistently, while proactively monitoring for attacks without causing delays in application development and delivery. Cloud adoption means that a focus on perimeter security is not sufficient and may even be obstructive, because it can impact application performance and availability. Similarly, relying on your cloud service provider’s security services is insufficient; any provider will tell you that securing the cloud environment is a shared responsibility between cloud service provider and customer, and the responsibility for specifically securing web applications is the sole responsibility of the customer. And although the industry as a whole has become better at protecting lower-level network and server resources, as attackers look for targets, they are moving up the application stack.

Based on a global survey of 800 CIOs, this report examines the challenges organizations face when working within complex, cloud-centric ecosystems. Technology is at the heart of every organization today. Now more than ever, society expects the services we use to be innovative and faultless, prompting the creation of hyper-complex IT ecosystems. Relying on physical databases and third-party cloud service providers, businesses are finding it increasingly difficult to monitor application performance, ensure positive experiences, and succeed in this new environment.

Use of cloud computing services continues to grow rapidly as organizations migrate business applications and data to cloud-based software, platform and infrastructure services. Gartner estimates 2017 will see growth of 18% in spending on public cloud services and that cloud adoption will infuence more than 50% of IT spending through 2020. Deloitte Global predicts that by the end of 2022 more than half of all IT spending will go to IT-as-a-service providers. In the 2016 edition of this survey, 56% of the security professionals responding said limitations on access to collect incident response data and evidence for forensic analysis was a key challenge to securing the cloud. Sixty-two percent said they were concerned about unauthorized access by outsiders, and 59% said they worried about access by other cloud tenants. Of the 10% who reported being breached, half blamed stolen credentials or compromised accounts.

In today’s digital economy, IT organizations are increasingly using public cloud technologies and services to meet their needs for increased agility and innovation, as well as cost management. This use of public cloud technologies is further complicated when companies use multiple cloud service providers, a concept also known as multi-cloud, and attempt to integrate on- and off-premises environments, known as hybrid cloud. IT organizations now must manage systems that span across both multi-cloud and hybrid cloud environments, which presents new challenges for data protection. The Veeam Availability Platform offers solutions that can provide data protection to, from, and within multi-cloud environments, ensuring companies can fully leverage their public cloud providers and existing on-premises systems.

DDoS attacks can impair your website, tarnish your brand, and impact your bottom line. Conventional security products like firewalls and intrusion prevention systems and newer cloud-based scrubbing services can’t protect your DNS infrastructure against today’s increasingly sophisticated attacks. The best way to defend against DDoS attacks is to trust the operation of your DNS infrastructure to a managed service provider that lives and breathes DNS. Best-of-breed managed DNS providers operate global anycast networks that mitigate DDoS threats to keep your online business up and running.
