AA Ireland specializes in home, motor, and travel insurance and provides emergency rescue for people in their homes and on the road, attending to over 140,000 car break downs every year, 80% of which are fixed on-the-spot. “In each of the last five years, the industry lost a quarter billion in motor insurance," says Colm Carey, chief analytics officer. "So, there's a huge push for new data, models, ways to segment and pick profitable customer types—and get a lot more sophisticated. Our goal is to optimize pricing, understand the types of customers we're bringing, and the types we're trying to attract. We would like to tie that across the business. Marketing will run a campaign, trying to attract a lot of customers, but maybe they're not the right type. "We wanted to step away from industry standard software and go with something that was powerful and future-proof. In 2016, we had an opportunity to analyze all software. With upward of a billion vehicles in operation across the world and rising urbanization there is an unprecedented level of traffic and congestion in our major towns and cities. On the front-line, are the emergency dispatchers and responders facing complex challenges as they attempt to overcome congested traffic, unexpected road closures and work zones as quickly as possible. Each additional minute of response time has the potential to save a life, reduce suffering or prevent unnecessary property damage. Most public safety and security organizations, however, are still using legacy location technology, which has its limitations and does not properly address some key challenges. As one of the world’s leading location platforms, HERE shares insights and solutions to improve emergency response times with real-time location data

Ransomware has taken the world by storm. CryptoWall extorted an estimated $18 million, and WannaCry locked up more than 230,000 computers across the globe in 2017. Companies of all sizes are sitting up and taking notice. Even brands with a strong security investment have fallen victim. We’ve seen ransomware cripple businesses: nearly 19% of businesses stop operations immediately after discovering a ransomware attack.1 Hospital emergency rooms forced to turn people away; global shipping logistics experience massive disruption; and even a summer blockbuster movie held up for ransom. The FBI estimates ransomware is now a billion-dollar business. Ransomware has been around for a while, and it has spiked in recent years. It secured 5th place as the most common variety of malware in 2017, up from 22nd place in 2014.2 Originally ransomware targeted individuals and was considered a consumer nuisance. It has now become a business menace.

In the last few years, businesses have changed the way they protect data. Studies show they’re abandoning traditional backup and recovery in favor of disaster recovery as a service (DRaaS).1 With DRaaS, businesses enjoy the luxury of keeping a replica of their data hosted at a remote site that they can fail over to in an emergency—without bearing any of the infrastructure costs or maintenance responsibilities. All infrastructure and maintenance is the responsibility of the provider. Gartner predicts that global DRaaS revenue will reach $3.4 billion by 2019. The firm cited several reasons for the shift:

When it comes to emergency shower and eyewash equipment, a ten-degree difference could make all the difference. The right water temperature is critical to ensuring medically suitable results for an injured person. Current ANSI Standards (American National Standards Institute) are referenced by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) when evaluating facilities and mandate a temperature range defined as “tepid.” This is clarified as a 40-degree temperature range for flushing fluids spanning from 60°F to 100°F [16°C to 38°C].

Federal safety regulations set forth by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) make the importance of safety equipment in potentially dangerous working environments clear. The stringent guidelines for emergency showers and eyewashes, however, don’t extend to the inclusion of mandatory alarm and electronic monitoring systems on this equipment. Implementing best practices with the addition of both alarm and wireless monitoring systems is the best way for workplaces to exceed normal expectations by creating superior emergency response procedures. From initiating an emergency response as soon as safety equipment is engaged to maintaining detailed records of when stations are used, tested, and maintained, these wireless systems can create safer, more responsive working environments. Not only will this help ensure employee safety, it can make it easier for facilities to stay in compliance with OSHA and ANSI standards.

Researchers in the occupational electrical medical emergencies show that in a six-year period 32,840 serious but non-fatal injuries occurred, some 60% involving electric shock and 40% involving electric burns. Obviously, the electric shock injuries occurred in relation to low voltage equipment since electric shock in relation to medium voltage equipment is as a rule fatal. It is reported that in the U.S., annually about 2000 arc burn related injuries occur and require hospitalization. Thus, the impact of such injuries on workers becomes a major concern in itself, beyond the economic aspects which are not to be ignored.
